Xlendi Bay

Address: Xlendi waterfront, Xlendi, Malta

Enjoy wonderful swimming and snorkelling in the perfectly clear water of this protected bay.

Xlendi is one of Gozo’s two resort villages - and by far my favourite. The tiny patch of pebbly-sandy beach is at a premium but there is lots of room to laze on the rocks and a whole bay of beautiful blue water to swim in. There are plenty of shallows for younger children, as well as rocks to jump or dive off into the deep. The snorkelling is good too - even right next to the shore. Divers, particularly the less experienced, also frequent the bay.

In summer, the seafront is given over to cafe tables and chairs and there are plenty of places to eat. Walk along to the headland and take a look at Xlendi Tower, built in 1650, the first of several built by the Knights of St John's as defence against invaders, smugglers and pirates. The point also has wonderful views.

Expert tips

The Xlendi Cruises kiosk on the little pier is a good place to book boat trips (I particularly like the Gozo cruise with swimming stops) as well as hire fun canoes and pedaloes.

Book in to Ta’ Karolina for a lazy family lunch on the water’s edge while kids splash in the shallows of a tiny mini-beach right next to the tables.

Let children “snorkel” (even with just swimming goggles) in a couple of feet of water. You can easily see half a dozen species of fish this way. Do take notice of the buoys – they are there to mark the swimming area and ensure you are not run down by a boat.
