Enjoy swimming and snorkelling off the beaten track in these beautiful surroundings.

This is one of my favourite swimming and snorkelling spots on Gozo. There is little sunbathing space here - the beach is miniscule and the rocks steep and a bit sharp - but it is a wonderful place to swim and snorkel. A rocky inlet in Gozo’s cliffy south coast, Mgarr Ix-Xini has steep sides and perfectly clear water. With nothing but a rough road leading to it (and no public transport) it is almost never crowded. You can see half a dozen species of fish before you even get your feet wet - and plenty more if you snorkel out along the rocks.

Expert tips

Park before the final slope unless you are absolutely sure your car will make it up again.

Walk up to the point to see the Mgarr Ix-Xini tower (usually open 10.30am-1.30pm Tue-Sat but you can check when it is open as the flag flies) – part of the Knights’ 17th-century coastal defence system against smugglers, pirates and invaders.

In summer, have lunch at the open air seafood restaurant (a cooking shack and tables) which does excellent fresh fish dinners.

Older kids may enjoy climbing up the sides of the rocks and jumping in. If so, look out for sea urchins or wear shoes.
