A lovely red sandy beach in an unspoilt bay away from the crowds.

This narrow red sand beach is a perfect place to sunbathe and swim in peaceful surroundings. The price is to walk down (and then up) a long flight of stone steps to get there from the car park (or bus stop). This would, none the less, be my choice of beach on Malta if I had a summer day to spare. There is a small snack bar and a couple of shacks renting sun loungers and watersports equipment.

Expert tips

The tower on the headland is part of the Knights’ 17th-century coastal defence system.

Over the clay hill at the far end of the beach is a smaller beach that attracts naturists and gays.

There can be a dangerous undertow a little way out from the beach after bad weather.
