A 15th-century fortress protecting the mouth of the Rio Tejo.

A mix of Byzantine, Manueline and Gothic styles make up this imperious icon, which stands out over the city's estuary. Delicate stonework, arches and statuettes make up the many intricate details of the pretty structure, the highlight of which is a stone rhinoceros, found at the foot of the western tower.

Price advice

Entry is four euros, and free for children.

Expert tips

On New Year's Eve the city's main street party takes place here and along the surrounding waterfront.

The water-top walkway which leads out to the tower can get splashed by waves on blustery days so bring water-proofs.
