Tour an ancient grotto and see where smugglers and pirates used to stash their treasures.

Over 100,000 years old, the caves of Can Marca – one of my favourite places to pit stop when taking friends on a tour of the island’s north – were once used by pirates and smugglers, and you can still see the evidence of their escape routes on the walls. It’s a quick and basic multi-lingual tour but gives you enough insight into the history, and enough stalagmites, stalactites, fossilized waterbeds to last your whole holiday!

Expert tips

The walk itself takes about 40 minutes and tours depart every half an hour in summer and every 45 minutes in winter. Booking ahead isn’t necessary.

Rug up warm in winter as it’s icy cold!

Check out the view of the luxurious private island just off the coast through the binoculars available – now THAT is how the other half live!
