Mysterious “secret” cove that’s well worth the hour-long hike.
I feel a little guilty sharing this info as it’s guarded preciously by islanders, so first I must beg you… please, please treat it with respect! At the base of a steep hill opposite the island of Es Vedra lies an off-the-beaten-track cove, surrounded by myths, mystery and magic, rumoured to be the location of the lost city of Atlantis. Yes, really. It’s like Ibiza’s very own enchanted kingdom.
Only after you’ve trekked up to the pirate watchtower of Torre de Savinar, then hiked along about another 25-minute steep incline to the base of the hill will you reach this breathtaking rock formation. It's result of the effects of time and nature (plus a little help from humans, in the form of carvings and art hailing back to the hippy era) on an ancient quarry. At one point, the sea flows into the sand-coloured rock shelves, creating an amazing swimming pool of turquoise water and once you’ve dived into the sea it feels as though you really have discovered one of the world’s most magical, peaceful locations. In my opinion, photos just can’t do it justice.
Whether it’s truly the home of Atlantis, well, I’m not entirely convinced… but it’s a nice thought, isn’t it?
