Tai Long Wan Beach

Concrete jungle? Ha! Think again - and don't forget the factor 15.

This is Hong Kong's loveliest beach. In fact there are two of them, separated by a small hill. The northern beach has better surf, while the southern one is backed by the (cash-only) cafés in the village of Ham Tin (meaning Salty Paddy Field).

Getting here will entail a walk of an hour or more from the main road at Pak Tam Au: the path is well marked and maintained. Food and drink are normally available in hamlets along the way, but bring some water just in case. Sun protection (cream, garments) is essential.

It's a huge beach, and rarely crowded. Topless is okay, total nudity frowned upon (officially and socially).

Every so often a sneaky bunch of developers tries to get a bulldozer in here. So far, the public outcry has frustrated them.
