Magical gardens with spectacular sea views and international music festival.

In an area where fabulous beaches are as plentiful as cornershops, occasionally it’s nice to go for a walk somewhere else and these magical gardens are one of my favourite places to do so.

Cap Roig is basically a series of terraced gardens cascading down from a hilltop castle down to the beach, linked by elegant footsteps lined with tall cypresses. In summer the scent of yellow sage, oleander and bougainvillea is absolutely heavenly but if you want the best coastal views, head for the Mirador de la Lady (The Lady’s Viewing point) or the Cactus Garden.

The annual open-air music  festival is held in the plaza or square in front of the castle (which is permanently closed) and attracts some top international names. (See When to go to Calella De Palafrugell for more details.)

Expert tips

If you're visiting in the summer, it's worth checking out who's playing in the music festival as they get some major international names from Bob Dylan, Liza Minelli and Herbie Hancock to Paco de Lucia, Jose Carreras and Diana Krall.
