No one can leap and tumble quite like a Chinese acrobat, as this entertaining show proves.

Even though Chinese acrobatics dates back some 2000 years, the glitzy, laser-strewn performance at Chaoyang Theatre owes as much to Circe de Soleil camp as those early pioneers. Production-wise it’s much less polished than the aforementioned Canadian circus empire, but make no mistake, the lithe guys and girls here are some of the best tumblers, balancers and hoop jumpers in the world. My favourite bit involves what looks like a giant hamster wheel upon which muscular men perform various body-defying feats of athleticism as it spins at breakneck speed. An astonishing spectacle.

Price advice

Most hotels will be able to book tickets for the two nightly shows here, with the prices starting upwards of 200 RMB for seats at the back. The theatre’s fairly small, so there’s little point shelling big bucks for seats at the front.

Expert tips

Booking through a hotel isn’t necessary – there are almost always spare seats if you turn up a few minutes before the performance.

Kill two tourist birds with one stone – catch the matinee performance at 5:15pm then dine on Peking duck after the show at Dadong, a short walk up the road.
