American Museum in Britain

Address: Claverton Manor, Bath, BA2 7BD, England

- Mid-range

Britain’s only American museum; on the outskirts of Bath.

Yet another of Bath’s fairly offbeat museums, the American Museum in Britain has been showcasing American arts and crafts for over 50 years. Strangely charming, I love to visit in winter time when the shop sells lots of authentic Christmas decorations, although the 30 acre grounds and arboretum are stunning in spring and autumn times. Exhibitions change, but the quilt displays are always really interesting and provide a lot of historical information about America through textiles.

Expert tips

Get discounts here with the Bath Visitor Card (available for £3 from the tourist office by the Abbey).

Two for one on entry with a train ticket, check the 'visit Bath' website for details as this offer tends to be seasonal Oct-Apr.

Visit the café for awesome American style cookies.

At Christmas time (late Nov/early Dec) the museum really embraces the festive spirit and it’s a magical place to visit with kids.

Check the website for news about military re-enactments, Sunday music sessions (jazz, gospel, bluegrass etc) and the Tuesday night quilting bees.
