A glimpse into the dying art of karagiozis - Greece’s equivalent of Punch and Judy.

Through figures, sets, and storybooks, you can trace the history of karagiozis, Greece’s shadow puppet theatreA converted hat factory in Thisseion contains the archives of three generations of master puppeteers – Christos, Giorgos and Sotiris Haridimos.Sotiris Haridimos, who ran the last puppet theatre in Plaka, is often here in person. An unemployed hunchback, Karagiozis is the ultimate anti-hero. Cunning and crude, his efforts to outwit the establishment usually end in disaster. But they provide great opportunities for social and political satire. There are occasional performances and puppet-making workshops (only in Greek).

The cultural centre also contains a recreation of an Athenian high street as it would have looked at the turn of the 20th century.
