This underrated museum gives an excellent introduction to Amsterdam's fascinating past.

Spread over a number of interconnected buildings in the heart of medieval Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Historisch Museum is often overlooked. It's packed with a wonderfully diverse range of displays. My personal highlights are the fascinating maps revealing the growth of the city, the exquisite model ships, and the gory Golden Age paintings of anatomy lessons. The modern section is engaging, too, with a mock-up of a famous Amsterdam bar run by a lesbian, and infomation about the infamous Provos of the 1960s.

The museum's café - Museumcafé Mokum - is a nice spot with a cosy courtyard.
