As you’d probably expect in a destination that attracts royalty, celebrity golfers and polo players, there are plenty of opportunities to unload serious cash in Sotogrande's shops.
Arguably the most popular retail centre is Blue Sotogrande, which opened in 2009 on the frontline of the marina. As well as the high-end fashion boutiques offering the latest collections, shoes, handbags, lingerie, perfumes, children’s clothing and accessories, the centre includes cafés and bars, a hair and beauty salon, a jewellery shop and an upmarket delicatessen.
The marina also hosts a weekly street market and car boot sale each Sunday morning.
Many of those who stay in Sotogrande, me included, use the opportunity to drive across the border onto the tax haven of Gibraltar for a spot of VAT-free shopping. Remember, queues to leave in the late afternoon can be long – and you’ll need your passport and pounds, of course.
