San Juan might come across as a sleepy little village, however the north of Ibiza hides the island’s hard partying heart – something the locals would like to keep their little secret. I guess the word is already out however, because in 2010, the international A-list and celebs were flocking up north to drink, dine and dance until the very early hours.
My absolute favourite is Aura (Carretera de San Juan, KM 13.5, San Llorenzo, 07812; +34 971 325 356; www.auraibiza.com), a beautiful restaurant, bar and garden cocktail lounge that’s also home to an intimate club hosting some of the coolest underground parties in Ibiza. I love the weekly Wax Da Jam parties with Nightmares on Wax on Tuesday nights in summer and Dantz on Friday nights in winter. Just down the road, you’ll find a more low-key affair at Monkey Bar (Carretera de San Juan, KM 12.8, San Llorenzo, 07812; +34 971 325 051; www.monkeybaribiza.com), where it feels a little like you’ve stumbled into someone’s living room - great if you want a night out without having to frock up in your finest.
There are fab parties in the back room at Bambuddha Grove (Carretera de San Juan, KM8.5, Santa Eulalia del Rio, 07819; +34 971 197 510; www.bambuddha.com), and after dinner at Ocho (Carretera de San Juan, KM9.5, Santa Eulalia del Rio, 07840; +34 971 807 308) on Saturdays, meaning the weekends are a good time to hit the San Juan “restaurant road”. In a surprisingly modern twist, given San Juan’s rustic reputation, you can check out free, bi-weekly fashion shows on the custom-designed, runway at Atzaro’s Bubble Bar (Carretera de San Juan, KM 15, San Llorenzo, 07840; +34 971 338 838) in between drinks at the many cool bars dotting the grounds of the hotel. There are also regular art exhibitions here, pulling in a cocktail-swilling crowd till the early hours.
