Glitzy Hvar has been compared to Ibiza - that might be overdoing a bit, but there certainly are some great bars and summer clubs in Hvar Town. The best known of these is Carpe Diem (Riva bb; www.carpe-diem-hvar.com; open daily May-September) with its arcaded stone facade giving onto a lovely waterside lounge terrace on Hvar's palm-lined seafront promenade. Think oriental wooden furniture and wicker sofas, pricey cocktails, and a mix of sun-tanned celebrities (Eva Longoria was seen here in summer 2010), moneyed sailing types, locals and a few burley bouncers. German tech house DJ Ian Pooley and Portugese electro house DJ Carlos Mendes have both played here. The same management run Carpe Diem Beach (Stipanska bay, Marinkovac island; www.carpe-diem-beach.com) a summer beach club which stages after-dark parties through August, and is served by night time taxi boats from Hvar Town.
For something a little less dressy, Hula Hula (a 15-minute walk west of Hvar Town, on the seaside path between hotels Amfora and Podstine; open daily June-September) is a rustic wooden beach bar with fantastic sunset views and chill-out music – a great way to start the evening with a drink. Later on you might call in at grungy rock bar Kiva (in a narrow side street off the harbour; open evenings April-October). And then wind up at my favourite venue in Hvar Town, Veneranda (Gornja cesta bb; www.veneranda.hr; open evenings June-September) a lovely bar playing electronic music with a pool and dance floor, which is hidden away in the pinewoods above the coast, west of town, close to Hotel Amfora.
