A glorious time-warp of a restaurant offers old-fashioned charm on the island of Torcello.

Not to be confused with the luxe hotel of the same name, the charming Locanda Cipriani on the tiny island of Torcello is a marvellous time-warp of a place set in a glorious garden. As well as a handful of simple rooms, the Locanda has a rather pricey restaurant which is open to non-residents. The food is reassuringly old-fashioned, like the attentive and very respectful service.

Food and drink

I find it quaintly comforting how nothing much ever changes at this lagoon classic where royals, A-list film stars, artists, musicians from Cole Porter to Mick Jagger and a host of other celebs have dined happily on Cipriani classics such as carpaccio (raw beef sliced paper-thin), risotto alla torcellana (with seasonal vegetables) and pesce sampietro (John Dory) fillet with tomatoes and capers. The desserts, in particular, are wonderfully reminiscent of special treats in an old-style children’s nursery.

Ambience

The two inside dining rooms are simply elegant, their tables done out with crisp linen and heavy silver cutlery. In fine weather there’s more seating under a vine terrace in the garden, with views across to the lovely round church of Santa Fosca.

Service

Charmingly discreet.

Location

On the all-but-deserted lagoon island of Torcello, this old-style inn with its beautiful garden is surrounded by green.

Price advice

Expect to pay around €80 for a three-course meal without wine.
