Retro restaurant bar witch a clutch of recreated classics.

A hip, slightly tongue in cheek venue on thr Ossington strip, Watusi is very much a tapas restaurant in the evening, until suddenly, a few hours later, it's morphed into a packed bar. It's great for a two-in-one experience when you don't feel like switching venues after dinner. The menu offers twists on the old classics - both food and drink.

Food and drink

Stack up a slew of small plates for a full meal here — or have a starter and drink here, then eat your way up the Ossington strip. Good options include the flatbread pizzas, beef tenderloin, marinated pork empanadas and the molten chocolate cake. The drinks menu is where the real effort lies - with so many martinis it gets near impossible to choose.

Ambience

The carefully chosen beautiful staff and the slightly whimsical nature of Watusi attracts a lot of the same crowd that frequent the pricy big money bars of King Street. This is one of their weekend haunts. Weekends on Ossington can get crammed, so if looking for a quiet dinner or snack out, pick a weeknight.

Service

Good - and carried out by a slew of very attractive women in 60s airline-inspired uniforms. It sounds tacky, but it actually works. People dress up a little to come here and not be outdressed.

Location

In he heart of the Ossington strip, slightly closer to Queen Street.

Price advice

It's pretty expensive by the time those small plates add up, so I'd recommend this as more a light meal of share plates and drinks.
