4.3

A family-friendly terrace overlooking a sandy bay – the taste of a Mediterranean summer.

Even though Tamariu is one of the Costa Brava’s smallest and mercifully, most unspoilt, bays, the tiny promenade is lined with restaurants and the first time I came, it would have been hard to know which one to choose had my sister, who lives nearby, not recommended this place. The Royal is more or less in the centre and has one of the larger, smarter terraces. It’s also very family-friendly and does a children’s menu.

Food and drink

Unsurprisingly, fish is the main deal here although some meat options are available. There’s a fish tank inside where you can choose your own lobster if that’s your thing and a good selection of fish like hake, bream and turbot. My boquerones (anchovies) were deliciously crispily fried.

Ambience

This is the ultimate Mediterranean summer lunch by the sea, with most tables filled with families enjoying unhurried afternoons. To my mind, the food is marginally better at [node:171537], further along the bay, but the terrace here is bigger and slightly smarter and they do kids dishes like spaghetti, so the choice is yours.

Service

The services is prompt but watch out for your bill. Last time I went, we were overcharged twice.

Location

It's on the edge of the bay.

Price advice

Tapas are 5-6 euros each. Main courses are 17-20 euros and children’s dishes are 6.50–7 euros.
