4.5

Enjoy award-winning and world-class cuisine in charming wine estate surrounds.

Terroir is top of my Winelands pops. A table under the oak trees overlooking the vineyards ticks all the boxes - couple this with choices off chef Michael Broughton's always-inspired blackboard menu and the estate's wines and things couldn't get better. I'm a fan of lazy lunches here - savouring the chef's simple yet outstanding flavour marriages should never be rushed.

Food and drink

The blackboard menu changes daily but the constants of local, seasonal and sophisticated rustic offerings remain. Wines are mostly from the estate and are excellent.

Recommended dishes

I'm a fan of Michael's risottos and pastas - light, lovely and whispered flavour marriages. Hearty offerings such as pork belly, confit and oxtail feature too and if there's fillet with marrow topping, order it.

Ambience

Delightfully laid back as befits the al fresco surrounds. I find the interiors uninspired - though the food more than makes up for it.

Service

Service here is slick and unobtrusive. The staff are knowledgeable too.

Location

Kleine Zalze Wine Estate, Stellenbosch.

Price advice

Main courses are, on average, 130 rand. A 'green season' out-of-season menu offers winter specials.

Tables to book

Try to book a table outside and under the trees.
