3.8

This is one of the Cape's longest standing country eateries with a fresh and modern menu.

Something of an institution, this well loved eatery on a wine farm is situated in a cottage and features a menu of robust offerings, some contemporary options and plenty of nods to the season's best.

Food and drink

They're famous for their steaks here with the waiter presenting a platter of raw cuts to explain things to their guests. There is seared fish with tasty accoutrements too and some inspired starters and salads. Ken Forrester's wines (the owner) are a significant and delicious feature.

Recommended dishes

The duck and cherry pie has been a signature here since 1996 but it's dishes like the pork belly strips (starters), chateaubriand and seared tuna on a bed of noodles that do this restaurant proud. I love their salads and the créme brûlée is simply superb.

Ambience

A somewhat dated Cape country cottage interior awaits guests. The atmosphere is laid back and, for lunch, a table on the outside terrace is lovely.

Service

The service at this restaurant is excellent - both on a wine and food level.

Location

96 Winery Road is off the R44 between Somerset West and Stellenbosch.

Price advice

Main courses cost, on average, 120 rand.

Tables to book

The private cellar is a novel setting for up to eight guests.
