Singapore’s most popular chicken rice stall.

This unassuming hawker stall has become so popular it’s spawned a restaurant in Joo Chiat. There must be a reason why there’s always a long queue at lunchtime. Oh wait a minute, is that an endorsement by Anthony Bourdain on the front of the stall? Well, if it’s good enough for Bourdain…

Food and drink

This is Singapore’s most iconic hawker stall dish - Hainanese chicken rice - cooked to perfection. The rice is fragrant and fluffy, while the chicken is succulent and tender, matched with chili sauce with a hint of lime.

Ambience

The Maxwell Food Centre is a rough and ready hawker cenre with no air-conditioning. It’s noisy and hot, but that’s part of its rustic charm.

Service

There’s an efficient production line of staff ready to heap rice and then chicken on your plate during the busiest times of the day. So if you ever have to queue, there’s never that long a wait.

Location

Maxwell Food Cenre is near Chinatown and a short walk from Tajong Pagar MRT station in the CBD.

Price advice

This is as cheap as it gets in Singapore. A small plate of chicken rice is just $3.50.

Branches

There's now a Tian Tian Chicken Rice restaurant in Joo Chiat.
