Food and drink
Crystal Jade Golden Palace, is considered among the fine dining establishments in the chain, serving contemporary Cantonese and Teochew cuisine with an extensive wine cellar too (though I've never had wine here). I love the dumplings – har gao and sui mai are served piping hot and are juicy inside. The glutinous rice wrapped in pandan leaves is tasty and enough to feed three or four people, while the pan fried carrot cake is cooked to perfection.
Dark wood, purple highlights, glitzy chandeliers and designer lamps make this a stand-out from the usual Cantonese and Teochew cuisine. There’s a romantic feel to the restaurant, but not usually at weekend lunchtimes, when it’s crawling with children. Bring a cardigan or jacket, I always find the air-conditioning here obscenely cold.
Prompt food service and polite waiters. Although, they always seem a little cheesed off when they discover I'm not fluent in Cantonese.
This Crystal Jade outlet is on the fifth floor of the ritzy Paragon Shopping Centre on Orchard Road. Somerset and Orchard MRT stations are nearby.
The dim sum is quite reasonably priced, especially given the ambience and location. Lunch for two people was between $30-35.
There's another couple of fine dining outlets at Ngee Ann City as well as Vivo City, while there are other more casual Crystal Jade restaurants at Changi Airport and around the city.
