4.5

Gorgeous gourmet tapas in a chic central location.

The word zelai means “field” in Basque, but nowhere could look less countrified than this very elegant modern tapas bar and restaurant.

Food and drink

Beautifully presented, the tapas are as pleasing to the eye as to the palate. I absolutely adore the grilled baby eels with salmon roe. Other favourites include the octopus salad and kobe beef burger (amazing chips!). There's a full-service restaurant at the back in a pretty glassed-in patio.

Ambience

It is clean and modern, with a stand-up tapas section at the front, sit-down tapas area in front of the bar and a restaurant on the patio at the back. It can get quite busy at peak times as it is a favourite with locals.

Service

The service is excellent and professional.

Location

It is just behind the Plaza Nueva.

Price advice

Designer tapas at designer prices, averaging at 4 euros. There is also nice house wine for 2 euros a glass. In the restaurant expect to pay 40-50 euros per person with a bottle of wine.
