A classic New York diner with no frills.

A New York greasy diner is an experience that shouldn’t be missed. Unfortunately it’s also a dying breed as higher rents move in and kick out this inexpensive neighborhood option. But whenever I am in town Viand is one of my first stops for a grilled cheese and thick vanilla milkshake. I love how the cramped space soldiers on despite its posh address opposite Barneys department store, one of the city’s best shopping spots. It’s the perfect place for before or after retail pilgrimages.

Food and drink

Classic diner fare includes plates of eggs and bacon, cheeseburgers, grilled cheese sandwiches (my favorite dish is the tuna melt) and turkey sandwiches - all available from breakfast to dinner. Kids love the pancakes.

Ambience

A cramped space that’s about the size of a subway car. It’s still great for people-watching as posh shoppers, Hollywood types, and locals run in for their “regular.” You might even catch a glimpse of Mayor Bloomberg..

Service

I’ll just say gruff. I once got in trouble for reading the newspaper instead of concentrating on my meal.

Location

On the swanky Upper East Side, it’s avoided being shut out as rents sky rocket along Madison Avenue.

Price advice

Items start at US$5.95 - it’s one of New York’s real deals.

Tables to book

Everyone wants a cosy booth but sit wherever the staff point you to or you’ll start off on the wrong foot right away.
