Home cooking in the East Village since 1995.

Since 1995, Mama's Food Shop has been an East Village staple, locals head here for hearty American home cooking. Think collard greens and fried chicken. It's buffet style, which allows the owners to keep the prices low. This is one of my favorite spots in the East Village for its no-nonsense good food and unpretentious vibe.

Food and drink

Hearty and filling. I don't know if anything is free-range or locally sourced but the food tastes like it is. The portions are substantial and you'll definitely fill up on good food and drink.

Recommended dishes

Mama's is known for its fried chicken and it earns every accolade. Every meat main dish comes with one side. During the winter, I like the butternut squash. During summer months, I'll opt for the roasted beets and apples.

Ambience

This is an uber casual place. You head to the counter to order, there's no waiter service. It gets a lot of student and 20-something diners.

Service

Since its buffet-service, you order at the counter. It's obviously fast. It also saves you money on a tip.

Location

In Alphabet City in the East Village, on the border of the Lower East Side.

Price advice

Dinner for two will only set you back about $25 - it's a steal. Brunch is $13 per person.
