An excellent ramen noodle joint that’s plucked right out of Japan.

An import from Tokyo, Ippudo NY is a recent discovery of mine but I was obviously on to a good thing when I waited an hour and a half for a table on a Tuesday night! The ramen was absolutely delicious.

Food and drink

The restaurant draws crowds daily for the amazing ramen dishes. Try the Shiomaru with pork tonkotsu or my favorite, the tofu veggie option with delicate homemade al dente noodles, and tasty appetizers like steamed pork buns.

Ambience

It's a clean, trendy and modern space that’s well lit and atmospheric. I especially like sitting at the open kitchen and watching the chefs at work.

Service

I don’t have much faith in the front person’s method for managing the wait - ie it doesn’t seem like there is a system - but once you get seated the servers are quick and efficient if not particularly warm.

Location

A convenient spot on 4th Avenue that’s close to Union Square. It may not be a particularly pretty block but I like that it’s easy to get to.

Price advice

Mains are from US$12, which seems fair when you consider how substantial they are.

Tables to book

Unfortunately the combination of the best ramen in the city and a no-reservations policy means that there is always a long wait, so when I visit now I go at off-peak hours or head in for a weekday lunch.
