Food and drink
The restaurant draws crowds daily for the amazing ramen dishes. Try the Shiomaru with pork tonkotsu or my favorite, the tofu veggie option with delicate homemade al dente noodles, and tasty appetizers like steamed pork buns.
It's a clean, trendy and modern space that’s well lit and atmospheric. I especially like sitting at the open kitchen and watching the chefs at work.
I don’t have much faith in the front person’s method for managing the wait - ie it doesn’t seem like there is a system - but once you get seated the servers are quick and efficient if not particularly warm.
A convenient spot on 4th Avenue that’s close to Union Square. It may not be a particularly pretty block but I like that it’s easy to get to.
Mains are from US$12, which seems fair when you consider how substantial they are.
Tables to book
Unfortunately the combination of the best ramen in the city and a no-reservations policy means that there is always a long wait, so when I visit now I go at off-peak hours or head in for a weekday lunch.
