A burger institution at just the right price.

Looking for an incredibly tasty burger with a good pint at a reasonable price? The Corner Bistro is a throwback to the neighborhood’s bohemian days before the latest gentrification and serves an old school burger with an incredibly good price tag. It’s also one of the best - even with the current trend of gourmet burgers on many a NY menu, this one is a benchmark. My hamburger-crazy husband and guy friends make frequent trips.

Food and drink

It is all about the burger here, an 8oz hunk of juicy grilled beef piled several inches high with melted cheese, bacon and raw onion, accompanied by nice draft beers. There is no menu and don’t ask for one, it will mark you as a tourist.

Ambience

Crowded and frenetic in the front by the bar, your best spot will be one of the banquettes toward the back.

Service

Ha. Well that’s not entirely fair but this is a harried group of people and they take their cue from the main bartender who is a bit of a grump. But don’t mind a little ill humour in old school spots.

Location

I am a huge fan of the West Village so I love any excuse to come to this part of town.

Price advice

It’s cash only here but expect a real bargain - US$6.95 for a burger and pints start at $2.50.

Tables to book

No reservations but don’t be put off by the ever present queue, it moves fast.
