There’s a plaice for us ... on top of a car-park.

Monaco is such a jammed-in little Principality that everything is on top of something else – and the St Benoit is on top of a car-park. It was Prince Rainier’s idea to put it there back in 1985, when the car-park was being built.

And a very good idea it was, too. The result is that the restaurant (and not least its terrace) has quite staggering views across the port and off to the old town up on the Rock. Conversely, light floods in through the great big windows, highlighting the St Benoit’s soft pastel shades and charmingly genteel interior.

What better surroundings, then, for some of the finest fish in the state-let? The St Benoit has been in the hands of the same couple since it opened, so they’ve dishes like scampi brochette with a creamy wild mushroom sauce pretty much sorted. The sea-bream grilled with fennel may be the best fish dish you have on holiday.

Food and drink

Mainly fish in Mediterranean preparations, but some pretty decent meat dishes too.

Ambience

Restrained and contented.

Service

Friendly.

Location

On the fifth floor of the Costa car-park, up the hill from the port.

Price advice

Two course lunch menu at 22.40 euros, three-course lunch or dinner menu 27 euros and four courses 38 euros. The à la carte is obviously pricier. The sea-bream grilled with fennel (mentioned above) comes at 28.50 euros.
