4.2

A new city centre brasserie serving classic dishes and cocktails in stylish surroundings.

With marble walls, toweringly-high ceilings, a mosaic floor and lots of mahogany, Browns feels like a rather grand place to eat and drink. You could easily be in a Viennese coffee house rather than just off one of Manchester’s busiest shopping streets. I like the fact that it is possible to either sit in the centre of the former banking hall and enjoy the buzz of people chatting at the huge bar, or to tuck yourself in one of the panelled rooms off the main section to enjoy a quieter meal.

Food and drink

Enjoy classic dishes such as pastas, salads, burgers, steaks and Sunday roasts done well. The food may not be quite as impressive as the surroundings but it is reliably good and complemented by an extensive wine and cocktail menu.

Ambience

Smartly dressed staff, a live pianist and the elegant decor make Browns feel like a classy place to eat. Diners and drinkers include businesspeople from local offices, Mancunians eager to see the grand building’s recent makeover, ladies who lunch and families.

Service

Staff are friendly and helpful.

Location

Browns’ central location makes it a great place for a mid-shopping trip lunch break. York Street runs parallel to the city centre’s busy Market Street (two streets back down High Street).

Price advice

Mains cost, on average, £12 and wine starts at £13.45 a bottle. If you become a friend of Browns on their website, you will receive a welcome offer (such as two courses for two people and a bottle of wine for £29) and be emailed special offers throughout the year.

Tables to book

For a more intimate meal, request a seat at one of the tables in the smaller rooms off the central area.
