A charming and traditional Argentine steak house.

I always feel as if I’ve tangoed into Buenos Aires’s boho district of San Telmo when I come here. Cluttered like an Argentine bric-a-brac shop, this steakhouse positively cackles under a candle-lit buzz to the strum-and-chime rhythm of tango music.

Food and drink

Steak is the main order of the day but there are also delicious veggie options such as endive and pear salad and tartines.

Recommended dishes

I always plump for the Argentine fillet steak with a side of chimichurri (garlic and parsley sauce).

Ambience

There’s a really fun buzz in this ramshackle café. As the evening wears on and the Malbec flows things can get quite boisterous.

Service

Run by two local sisters, the service is friendly and personal.

Location

At the top of the Calçada Escadinhas do Duque stone staircase.

Price advice

Last time I ate there, two of us ran up a bill of around 70 euros, including a couple of bottles of wine.

Tables to book

The view over the city-centre from the wobbly seats and tables outside is lovely in the summer.
