4.5

A flavour of the Canaries in an historic venue in Tenerife's most aristocratic town.

I love taking people to Sabor Canario because it's such a wonderful courtyard setting in which they can try some of the most traditional Tenerife cuisine, such as gofio (a milled corn whose use pre-dates the Spanish conquest) and conejo en salmorejo (rabbit stew).

Food and drink

There are traditional and authentic Canarian dishes, a good choice of tapas starters and a nice wine list with local, La Orotava labels.

Ambience

A lovely courtyard setting gives an intimate ambience. It's informal and friendly and very busy with locals on Sunday lunchtimes and holidays.

Service

It's not the fastest but friendly and attentive. You'll need some Spanish to get by.

Location

It's in the charismatic courtyard of the 16th-century Hotel Rural Orotava in the beautiful old quarter.

Price advice

Starters/tapas start from 3-6 euros, main courses from 7-10 euros and desserts 2.60 euros.
