Wonderful exuberant Italian restaurant.

If you ever feel the urge to sing 'Just one Cornetto', then this is the place to do it. Big, fun and always busy: they open their arms to all comers - young, old, babies, business and teenagers, everybody's welcome.

Bar Roma is an Edinburgh institution. Coming up for it's 30th anniversary, this a great local favourite. The whole place runs like clockwork, featuring exuberant pepper-grinding and parmesan-sprinkling, like they used to do in old Napoli. And if you ask for a banana split and you're over the age of 18 - be prepared.

Food and drink

Great thin-based pizza from the oven, lovely pastas and salads: all the favourites. It's open all day so can come in with a grizzly child for a pizza anytime and as they get stuck into that, you can snorkle into a large coffee or glass of wine. This place has saved many a family day out.

Ambience

Chequered table cloths and big tables: sociable, lively and friendly.

Service

Great staff. Big characters who are just brilliant with everyone, especially kids.

Location

The restaurant is tucked away in the West End, but ask any local where it is – they will know.

Price advice

A two course lunch is £12.95 between noon and 7pm, or, if you stick to the traditional favourites, it is extremely reasonable: £7.95 for a margerita pizza and the same price for bolognese. Everything off the takeaway menu is £5.50, which includes pizza and pasta.
