The emphasis is on great local produce; for me, it has to be a juicy steak and a classic English pud, though I couldn’t resist the white chocolate crème brulée from the table d’hote last time I visited.
Formal and hushed; hotel guests and locals enjoying their dinner and conversation.
Friendly and inconspicuous, wine is topped up discreetly.

Á la carte: a little steep but you get plenty of style. The table d’hote menu is very good value (£15.50 dinner, two courses).
