Traditional Caribbean cuisine in a cult Cardiff nightspot

Rockin’ Chair lounges proudly on the grounds of one of Cardiff’s most infamous underground drinking dens, Rajahs. Once a dingy dance hall/pool club for all misfits, waifs and strays, it’s now a homely, laid back bar with a clutch of mini dining tables at the back, a small stage for reggae and open mic nights and some fine authentic cooking.

Food and drink

Open from 2pm to late night, Rockin’ Chair’s menu suits any hour of the day; the small but perfectly formed menu serves nothing but simple, tasty Caribbean food such as plantains, jerk chicken, oxtail and really fluffy peas and rice.

Recommended dishes

A sign of a good Caribbean restaurant has to be the quality of their jerk seasoning. Their chicken is perfect – not too sweet, not too spicy and satisfyingly sticky. Looking for a more wholesome brew? Head for the Caribbean soup, but watch out for the dumplings – they take over the bowl!

Ambience

Memorably mellow; the locals chatter and giggle at the bar as dub and reggae music eases away in the background.

Service

Relaxed and friendly. Rockin Chair is just as much a bar as it is a restaurant but that doesn’t detract from their attentive service.

Location

Rockin’ Chair is just east of the centre in Riverside, a five minute walk of the station or stadium.

Price advice

All main meals are under £10, most are only £6
