Food and drink
Italian specialities that have been sexed up are a signature here. The wine list is excellent with plenty of by-the-glass choices.
Try the tagliata (seared sirloin served on leaves) with zucchini, parmesan and pine nuts - it's my favourite. My fiancée swears by the steaks and the penne with spinach, bacon and pine nuts is outstanding too. Their spaghetti vongole is the best in town.
There's always a friendly buzz in this restaurant and, though it's a neighbourhood institution, there's a smart sheen to it too. The interiors are lined with wood from old wine crates - there's no denying you're in wine lovers' territory here.
This restaurant and its sister eatery La Perla in Sea Point is one of the last to employ a brigade of older men who have been guiding diners to the right choices for decades. Slick, knowledgeable and discreet service is a given here. Surly sometimes too - this is their turf and don't you forget it!
In the heart of Newlands Village.
Main courses are around the 100 rand mark.
Tables to book
Noise levels can rise as this busy restaurant gets going - ask for a quieter booth upstairs if need be.
