If you are looking for meaty eats in an authentic steak environment, this restaurant is it.

When it comes to steaks, concierges and trendy types may recommend the latest style-driven establishments but I always recommend this City Bowl spot. It has been going for more than 50 years and my father held business meetings here for years. I love making an impromptu booking after drinks at the Planet Bar in the [node:170217], situated just across the road. It's old school, it's slightly tacky but it's great - just ask the regulars, the movers and shakers and the families who've been coming for years.

Food and drink

Steaks, grills (seafood too) and burgers are served with a myriad sauces and the ubiquitous creamed spinach and mashed butternut accompaniment musts.

Recommended dishes

I always have the same thing here:  garlic (of nuclear proportions) snails with fresh brown bread for dipping followed by a fillet steak with mushroom sauce (sometimes green peppercorn) and extra onion rings. There are, however, loads of other excellent choices - speciality steaks like the Hollandse biefstuk with a decadent mushrooms, mustard and red wine sauce, their famous ribs, a myriad seafood options and - if you're feeling virtuous - there are generous salads. The peppermint crisp pudding is a delicious retreat to the seventies.

Ambience

Intimate, friendly and buzzing with happy steak eaters.

Service

Efficient.

Gardens, behind the [node:170217].

Price advice

Main courses are, on average, 150 rand.
