4.6

Classy, contemporary Catalan cuisine in a stylish, minimalist interior.

This is the restaurant for the [node:170081] in the tiny, village of Regencós, just a short drive from Begur and the coast. As with the hotel, the restaurant has been converted from a 19th-century theatre but alongside the original rough stone walls. It now also has a minimalist, contemporary interior with a Modernist glass facade overlooking the hotel pool and garden. I’ve always admired the Catalans for the way they manage to sensitively update old buildings and this is no exception.

Food and drink

This is contemporary Catalan cooking with an emphasis on meat (although there is always also a 'catch of the day’) with dishes like steak tartare and pig’s trotters with caramelised grapes. I particularly enjoyed the duck confit with baby onions in port wine and our waiter recommended some excellent local wines.

Ambience

It's stylish, cool and design-conscious but without being too po-faced.

Service

The staff are excellent – friendly and attentive. I’ve also overheard waiting staff speaking very good English to other diners.

Location

It's on the main village square in Regencós, about a 10-minute drive from Begur and lovely Costa Brava beaches like Llafranc, Tamariu and Calella de Palafrugell.

Price advice

Main courses are 13-25 euros. Dinner for two with wine is around 100-120 euros. In March 2011, they're going to be starting a new tapas menu which will work out around 26-28 euros per person.
