4.5

High and dry, but with the feel of being all at sea.

Surrounded by huge windows, acres of blond wood (even part of the floor looks like decking) and masts bobbing and weaving (fortunately outside the windows), when you dine at Dársena (the Dock) you feel as if you could be sailing through the calm waters of the Med as you tuck into superb food and decadently luxurious wines. This year (2011) Dársena celebrates fifty years of being one of Alicantes favourite restaurants, and has created a special menu and various events to celebrate its half-century, (a pretty unique experience in the shaky world of restaurants). In that time the rich and famous, artists, businessmen, gourmets and families, have passed through its doors, often to return time and time again.

Food and drink

You might think it’s almost impossible to serve rice in one hundred and seventy different ways – excluding sweet versions, but Dársena has that many different choices on its menu, and you can select from around two hundred wines to accompany them. The carta reads like a dictionary of gastronomic indulgence, and whilst I would definitely not be tempted by the carpaccio of pig’s trotters with warm mushrooms my Spanish friend drooled over (trotters and tripe are about the only things I can’t get past my lips), my traditional lobster stew had me equally enamored. To savour a visit in advance, their web page has a selection of menus at various prices. There is also a 50th anniversary menu. The main menu points out that most of the dishes are fine for celiacs (celíacas), but it’s best to mention it to the waiter.
