Getting around Oxford is best done on bicycle. We have plenty of buses and there are a lot of taxi companies but cars, buses and taxis invariably get caught up in traffic jams (which tend to coincide with the school run). Moreover they have to obey the one way systems. Not only are bikes often allowed to go where motorised vehicles are not, on two wheels you can hop off if necessary and walk along the pavement to avoid going three sides of a square like all the four wheeled vehicles. If you are going to be driving around Oxfordshire as well as staying in the city, hiring a car is worthwhile although if you're going to go to the trouble of having to park your car in Oxford you may as well hire at Heathrow or Gatwick airports and have the advantage of getting quickly to your hotel. A final word on cars in Oxford: If you must drive avoid taking your car out between 8am and 9.30 and between 2.30 and 4pm. That way you may miss the worst of the school run!
