Silent Night; Away in a manger; O Little Town of....Coventry?!
It’s not your traditional holy city (though it’s got not one – but TWO cathedrals) and it certainly isn’t a filmmaker’s favourite. But this Christmas religion and the movies collide over the Midlands city and the result is this yuletide season’s hot Brit movie Nativity!
I’ll be attending the premiere tonight. Not in London’s fancy Leicester Square Odeon, the venue of a thousand red carpets, no, no, no. It’s the humble Odeon Coventry that has the honour of hosting the world’s first screening.
The big star of the film – he of The Office and Love Actually fame Martin Freeman – will be in attendance as well as a host of talented city youngsters who featured in the Brit flick.
Filming took place in and around Coventry – the UK’s 11th largest, though it never boasts – last year and a Kenilworth street was decked out in all the finery of Christmas in the slighter warmer climes of September.
Coventry is my home city and I’m delighted the cream of Britain’s filmmaking talent is setting up camp here – even if it is for one night only.
Keep an eye out in the coming days for my travel guide on Coventry.
Nativity! is on general release on Friday November 27 at cinemas nationwide. The film was directed by Coventry’s Debbie Isitt and supported by Screen West Midlands through regional development agency Advantage West Midlands.
