A lovely hotel in a great location - feel the beat in the heart of the city.

On Stephansplatz, directly across from the main entrance to St. Stephan’s Cathedral, this post WWII, seven-story building has emerged as a stream-lined hotel that has been extensively but gently renovated, in compliance with modern environmental standards. The building materials indoors and out, facilities, equipment and high-tech installations are all eco-friendly. I find the modern interior design goes well with the plain façade.

Location

Central: Stephansplatz is the very heart of Vienna and a main underground station. I would say there's no better location than this, situated directly across from the Cathedral’s main entrance. Many of the rooms have a direct, unobstructed, view of the so-called “Giant’s Gate”, (legend has it that a mammoth's tusk was discovered here during construction work in the 12th century, and was thought to have been the tooth of a giant). The main shopping streets, Graben and Kärntnerstrasse, are around the corner.

Bedrooms

All the pleasantly decorated rooms have sound-proof windows, polished wooden floors and warm yellow and orange coloured interiors. Double rooms come in three different categories and sizes. There are three non-smoking floors. Beds have excellent, special “breathing” mattresses - particularly good if you suffer from back problems. Accommodation includes flat screen TV, free WiFi and air conditioning. Bathrooms with heated floors come well-equipped either with a bath and/or shower, bathrobes and special Aloe Vera toiletries.

The top floor “Tobias Suite” with its very own sensational private terrace is rather nice.

This is a much sought after location, booking early is advisable.

Public areas

The public areas are rather restricted. There's a small seating area in the lobby next to reception and an artsy bar on the first floor.

Eating and drinking

A generous and varied buffet breakfast – with sparkling wine and salmon and a good choice of freshly squeezed juices – is included in the room rate, served from 6.30 till 11am. The location for breakfast is just simply superb - just above the square overlooking the main cathedral entrance. During the day snacks, soups and pastries are available in the same bar.

Leisure facilities

There is a small, private sauna and gym equipped with a few machines available for guests.

Service

The staff are knowledgeable and friendly.
