Right beside Sorrento's 'old wall' that it takes its name from, Antiche Mura could hardly be closer to the centre. Everything is on your doorstep. The harbour is five minutes' walk and the train and bus station about two minutes away.
The hotel was refurbished in 2004 and although the rooms here are unlikely to win any cutting-edge style awards (a bit too much olive green and mustard tones for my taste) they are clean, comfortable and a reasonable size, and the luxury suite has its own Jacuzzi. Bathrooms are big and bright and have hydro-massage showers.
The breakfast room is an art-nouveau beauty with a spectacular light fitting that seems to take up most of the ceiling, but the outdoor space is the thing here. The breakfast room looks out onto the lovely garden, a fabulous citrus grove, as well as an area around the pool with chairs, sunbeds and umbrellas.
Eating and drinking
Breakfasts here are so good that you might find yourself still sitting here at half ten… perhaps just one more little pastry. The enormous table is laden with everything from fruit, cereals, yoghourts, breads, cheeses, hams to the biggest array of biscuits, cakes and pastries that I've ever seen. Juice is the freshly-squeezed product of the lemon and orange groves outside. From May through to the end of October light lunches are also served: pasta, pizza, salads and so forth.
The lovely pool area is surrounded by orange and lemon trees. The hotel's own boat is available for transfers and trips to Capri, Positano and Amalfi.
Service here is exceptionally good, but Michele goes beyond the call of duty and can help with everything that you might need for a happy stay.
