3 star hotel

4.6

Stylish boutique hotel right in the heart of Sotogrande marina.

There is something incredibly glamourous about Hotel Maritimo, which is designed by trendy Madrid-based style guru, Pascua Ortega. Within touching distance of the line up of yachts and gin palaces anchored in Sotogrande marina, I always feel that I'm "among the chosen few" here. The tone is set by its Catalan hotel manager, who wafts around with classic model-like aplomb, while many of the hotel guests have clearly just alighted from their yachts.

Location

You can almost see into the affluent yachts of Sotogrande marina, you're that close. Gibraltar is about a 20-minute drive away, so many chose to fly into The Rock, as Gibraltar is known, when staying here.

Bedrooms

The 40-odd rooms at Maritimo – eight of them suites – are some of the hippest I have seen in Andalucia. You walk in via the bathroom/wet room, which looks through to a large sitting area, then a big sumptuous bed and, best of all, I love the huge roll-top baths beside the windows, from where you can bathe looking over the boats and in the distance Gibraltar and, on most days, Africa. Rooms have cool touches like a flat-screen TV perched on a pole. There is a huge array of lamps to get just the right mood, and even a pillow menu.

Public areas

The high-ceilinged foyer leads onto a bright central atrium full of ferns, off which most of the bedrooms are found. Next door is the excellent café - with its bright paintings, chandeliers and simple, wooden furniture - which serves up basic tapas and drinks all day long.

Eating and drinking

Breakfast is served in a fabulous first floor lookout with stylish decor, unusual pebble wallpaper and an amazing outdoor sun deck with great views across the marina and towards Africa. The downstairs restaurant is usually very busy at lunchtime and has a great, good-value lunch, while on the other side, the separate privately-owned restaurant Midas is where the Duchess of York and her daughters can frequently be found dining in summer. Oh, and Rod Stewart and Antonio Banderas and Mariah Carey... need I go on?

Leisure facilities

There are special rates for guests at the famous Cucurucho beach club, as well as both the Octagono and Point gyms.

Service

So efficient you never know the staff are there - it's that kind of place. There's room service till 11pm.

Who stays there

Captains of industry, businessmen, fashionistas and friends of the British royal family in summer.

Price advice

While not cheap there is a huge variation in room price from winter to summer.
