A well-kept secret in leafy Gramercy Park.

Two townhouses dating from 1834 keep this hotel in a bygone era when Edith Wharton and the like made this area of New York famous. The atmosphere is genteel and there are no other properties like this in New York City, but I think the price is quite high considering the lack of on site facilities.

Location

Gramercy Park is one of my favorite landmarks in New York: quiet, pretty and residential but a quick walk to Union Square.

Bedrooms

The decor continues the landmark's old world vibe with oriental carpets, original fireplaces, four poster beds, upholstered chaises and cherry wood floors. There is complimentary WiFi and you can borrow cell phones and laptops to keep you up to date with the 21st century. I think that the place could do with a renovation to get it back to a level that matches the price because although the design is romantic, it is slightly worn too.

Public areas

Romantic drawing rooms and hushed corners take you to another century.

Eating and drinking

Only breakfast is served here daily but there is a nice afternoon tea option at Lady Mendl's, with classic finger sandwiches and freshly baked scones.

Leisure facilities

Nothing on site but there is a gym nearby and a neighborhood garage if you have rented a car.

Service

Fine, but not outstanding.

Who stays there

Genteel types, older couples, Europeans looking for a more intimate vibe.
