A mid-priced hotel on a busy stretch of Soho.

Soho is one of the city's most popular neighborhoods. On weekends, you're sure to run into a famous face or two. Although most lodgings in the area are expensive, deals can be found if you know where to look. The Gem Hotel, part of a chain of hotels in the city, is moderately priced and thoroughly welcoming.

Location

On a busy stretch of East Houston Street, which abuts the East Village and Lower East Side. Shops and restaurants are mere steps away.

Bedrooms

This is a true boutique hotel in that there are only 45 rooms. Rooms run from standards to doubles to business (the last have refrigerators and microwaves for the busy worker). Rooms are compact but cleanly decorated in whites and neutrals and have wooden headboards, LCD TVs, down pillows and Gilchrist & Soames bath products.

Public areas

The wood and leather lobby is fairly standard as lobbies go but what sets the GEM apart is the large chalkboard listing neighborhood events and staff selections on the best places to eat and play in the area. Guests can post their opinions and experiences as well.

Eating and drinking

The hotel doesn't have a restaurant or lounge.

Leisure facilities

There is neither a spa nor a fitness center in the small space.

Service

Service is friendly and quick.

Who stays there

Students, young couples, anyone on a budget.
