The hotel is 4km from the airport, 1.2km from the port, 1.2km from the main train station at Piazza Garibaldi and a couple of minutes from the metro. It's just across from Piazza Bellini, which is a great place to grab a coffee or, come the evening, a quick aperitif. It's also close to the tourist attractions of Santa Chiara church, San Gregorio Armeno (the street where you can pick up your presepi – nativity displays), and five minutes from the busy shopping street, Via Toledo.
All 19 rooms are simply elegant and stylishly decorated: choose between muted tones with splashes of colour, or a rich bold palette with contemporary artwork. Some rooms have four-poster beds and bathrooms are luxuriously furnished. Those who haven't booked a room with a terrace overlooking the pool take comfort in having breakfast on the patio.
The reception area, in keeping with rest of the hotel, is elegant with a mix of antique and contemporary furniture. The lounge area, where breakfast is taken, is dominated by a marble fireplace and artworks from the original villa.
Eating and drinking
Breakfast is a buffet affair served in the lounge (or in your room) with the usual fresh juices, fruits and cereals as well as good cheeses and meats. Drinks can be served all day, and I can definitely recommend a cool beer when you’ve had a hard day pool-side.
The pool is the extent of the leisure facilities; it's not huge mind – don’t imagine you’ll be doing laps all day, it's more or a 'dipping into and nipping out again to sip a beer in the sun' pool. Massages can be arranged and are included as part of certain packages.
A fixed-fare pick-up service (with participating taxis) can be arranged from the airport for 16 euros, and to the central station for 9.50.
Who stays there
It’s a small, boutique hotel so not for the business crowd; rather for those who like a bit of luxury but don't want to be too far from reality (it’s all going on outside). And we hear that it’s a favourite of historian Mary Beard, who presumably rests up here after a tiring day in Pompeii.
