Budget friendly and unashamed party hotel that’s chic, hip and very pink.

This beautifully decorated boutique hotel in a fabulous location isn’t for everyone, and the owners make no secret of that. The Whitelaw’s a small boutique hotel that caters for the late-night party set… there’s music pumping from the lobby lounge into the early hours, every night. If you’re looking for the full-on South Beach experience, it’s here. But take your granny and your children to stay elsewhere.

Location

A block back from Ocean Drive, on one of the busiest fashion-shopping stretches of Collins Avenue, the Whitelaw is about as central to the South Beach action as it’s possible to get.

Bedrooms

The overwhelming colour-scheming of pink, red and white makes this, for my money at least, a more popular choice for the girls. Similar in layout to its sister Hotel Chelsea nearby (49 rooms over three floors), the small rooms and bathrooms can feel a little claustrophobic at first – but they’ve found room for a fridge, iPod dock stereo and plasma TV to make you feel comfortable.

Public areas

The white-and-bright lobby, with white high-backed renaissance style chairs and unusual padded white circular bench is lacking only a pink flamingo for that authentic Miami look. The hallways are brightly decorated in white with funky pink-and-black designer artwork. There’s a sun terrace on the roof for sleeping off that hangover.

Eating and drinking

After years of providing bland, uninteresting food, the Whitelaw thought again and recently installed a new restaurant/eatery under the name Jiminy Crickets. The theming’s a little cheesy but the breakfasts at least are pretty good. The lobby bar is lively and loud.

Leisure facilities

Nothing on site.

Service

Service is usually efficient but don’t waste your time calling front desk to ask them to have the music turned down.

Who stays there

Partying young couples, singles looking to hook-up and single-sex groups such as hen parties.

Price advice

Many early booking and summer discounts available, Resort fee ($15 a day) at least gets you free drinks at happy hour.
