Set among a number of other hotels, and a wide assortment of restaurants and clubs along Washington Avenue, the Clinton boasts a good position central to the South Beach buzz and a short, two-block walk to the ocean.
The 88 rooms and suites are decorated in an elegant, contemporary style with plain white linens, subtly patterned brown carpets and dark wood furniture. Many overlook the courtyard and pool area, which is best described as “cosy” and can get very noisy. Some rooms have jacuzzis on private balconies.
Other than the curved check-in desk at one end, the lobby is more of a giant entertainment lounge with long and low white sofas, decorative chandeliers and a large flat-screen TV adjacent to the bar. The courtyard is pretty small and enclosed.
Eating and drinking
The Clinton’s restaurant, bar, café and lounge form one entity called X/O, with the food largely American and Mediterranean. The bar and lounge fill nightly for happy hour at 7pm, and the atmosphere remains lively into the night, often until it closes at 5am when the last of the returning nightclubbers are ready to hit the sack.
I was impressed to find a more than decent spa, the small and intimate Purple Room, in a hotel the size of the Clinton, offering a good range of treatments. The pool area is small and close to the rooms, and I’d probably take exception to its description of “lushly landscaped”, but I’ve seen far worse. A small fitness room completes the leisure line-up.
The Clinton is proud of its “hip” young things employed on the front desk, though sometimes you can feel like they have bit of an attitude. Bar and pool staff are polite and helpful.

Young party-lovers and sun-seekers on weekend breaks, and the hotel does well for business travellers during the week. Longer-term vacationers tend to be largely European.
