Star rating:
4 star hotel

4.5

A classic grand hotel with rooftop pool on the Gran Vía.

Built in the 1940s, the Emperador is big, bold and all about traditional glamour. I’ve often spotted politicians and celebrities being interviewed in the lobby bar. The roof terrace is one of the most coveted spots in the city, and my haven on hot summer days.

Location

On the Gran Vía, the grand avenue that cuts through the centre of Madrid. Calle Preciados, a major shopping street, is around the corner and leads down to the Puerta del Sol, the city’s central square. The nightlife areas of Malasaña and Chueca are 10 minutes’ walk away. Between Callao and Plaza de España metro stations.

Bedrooms

The 232 rooms are in the process of being redecorated. I really like the classic old design, with its fleur-de-lys carpets, but the new look with a cool grey theme is good too. All rooms have plasma televisions and marble bathrooms with bathtubs. Most rooms are non-smoking, so if you want to smoke say so when you book. There is WiFi but it’s not free.

Club rooms on the first floor have kettles, trouser presses and views of the Gran Vía, and room 122 has a balcony too. All superior rooms and junior suites can use the club area with a lounge and free bar. On the sixth floor, 612 is a standard room which has been revamped. At the quieter rear of the building, there are fabulous views from the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Royal Palace, Casa de Campo park and the Sierra de Guadarrama. On the seventh floor, 726 is an enormous club junior suite with a curving window and a corner bath.

Public areas

The vast marble lobby comes complete with a grand piano, as you might expect.

Eating and drinking

The lobby bar serves snacks such as plates of Iberian ham and salads. I often use this bar for a quiet drink and a sit down if I need a break from the Gran Via. In summer, a set lunch (18 euros) is served on the roof terrace, and sandwiches and other light meals are also available.

Leisure facilities

The swimming pool on the roof measures 10 x 15m, and there are lots of loungers and tables. In the basement, there is a gym, sauna and hairdresser.

Service

Professional and efficient staff who speak good English.

Who stays there

Tourists, business travellers and celebs.
