Star rating:

3.8

A top class hostel close to Oxford Circus.

Opened in 2008 in a former office block, this 302-bed hostel is a flagship property of the YHA. Clean and friendly with staff who are full of ideas of what to do - including free walks, discounted admission to attractions and guest-list entry to top nightclubs - it's a super place for anyone new to London or on a tight budget. Unless you're travelling in a group or family, or book one of the few two-bed rooms, you'll be sharing with strangers - and that's all part of the hostelling experience.

Location

I think the YHA picked their spot very well. The hostel is close to both Oxford Circus and Great Portland Street Underground stations, and in a safe, mixed-use area with both residential and office properties. You can easily get to anywhere in the capital, plus you're near to Regent's Park when you need some green space.

Bedrooms

The hostel is spread over six floors with 59 rooms. These contain from two to eight beds and in some cases are en suite - the majority have four beds and they all have a window. All beds are bunks and allocated by gender which means couples have to split up. The furnishing is comfortable but institutional with lots of blonde wood, grey carpet and bright light. There is a locker for your luggage and you need to take a padlock and towel (or pay for them).

Public areas

Reception comes combined with a café/bar, lounge, internet terminals and rows of white tables with red chairs. The hostel also has a large self-catering kitchen, laundry, and storage for bicycles and luggage.

Eating and drinking

There's a café/bar that's open 24 hours with alcohol available till 11pm - after a good night out it's very handy to be able to order a quick pizza... The atmosphere is studenty with music always playing, national flags pinned to the ceiling and good deals available on beers and cocktails.

Leisure facilities

None - well, there's table football in the bar plus it's an easy walk north to Regent's Park.

Service

Friendly and caring. Reception is open 24 hours and the staff are keen guests get the best of their time in London, offering free maps, advice and tips. Check out is at 10am.

Who stays there

Primarily backpackers, students and young travellers - plus families and people of all ages and backgrounds who like the low costs and communal spirit that hostelling offers.

Price advice

Rates include VAT but not meals, WiFi or obligatory YHA membership (£3 a day). Book early for the best prices and choice of rooms - weekends are particularly busy.
